In this session, you will learn how to select herbs, which types of soil to use and when, how much water is too much or not enough, the importance of light, garden design from the simplest to most formal, proper care and harvesting, preserving and more.
CREATING THE OUTDOOR ROOM
A wonderful retreat can be created regardless of space or budget. Think about who will gather, their comfort, and mood you want to create. Consider elements that stimulate the senses, such as water and fire; they’re natural components of an outdoor retreat. Also think heaters, spas, water gardens and meditation areas to give the outdoor room your own feeling. At this informative seminar, the Jacobsen Design Team will cover the above and other topics on how to create the perfect outdoor room for peaceful and easy living.

Jacobsen Receives National Environmental Award
 |
Glenn Jacobsen, CLP, founder and owner of Jacobsen Landscape Design of Midland Park and Saddle River, was honored recently at PLANET’s (Professional Landcare Network) 40th Annual Environmental Awards Ceremony for the company’s role in the preservation of a local Ho-Ho-Kus landmark.
The historic home, one of Bergen County’s Jersey Dutch sandstone houses, has elements predating the American Revolution. After 200 years the property saw numerous owners and many modifications yet still stood in a state of disrepair. The owner’s vision for this homestead was a historically correct transformation.
Working for over two years with a team of engineers and architects, Jacobsen researched every aesthetic and technical element of the site to make sure they were all reflective of the time and geographic area according to the earliest available photographs (circa 1900).
“Unlike today’s landscapes and gardens, carefully arranged and manicured foundation plantings were uncommon in the 1700s. Plantings reflected society’s minimalist approach and attitude. So it was important that the few plantings chosen for this restoration, like the various stonework, were time-period accurate” stated Jacobsen.
“Also challenging was that only few elements, such as two bluestone steps, the remnants of a brick wall and a millstone, remained from the original homestead. Each was carefully collected and incorporated into the new design.”
“This initiative was a true team effort involving professional colleagues as well as our own landscape designers and installers. Without the support and commitment of the homeowners however, it could not have been accomplished” stated Jacobsen. “They really deserve the recognition.”
PLANET is the premier global trade association for the Green Industry. Its Environmental Improvement Awards Program reflects the commitment of PLANET members to create and preserve the beauty of our landscapes. The program rewards independent landscape, interior landscape and lawn care professional who execute superior projects.

Our Commitment to Giving Back:
|
|
At Jacobsen Landscape Design and Construction “ Our Giving” is one of our Company Culture Principles. Every year we ask our employees to volunteer their time, energy and expertise to benefit the communities in which we live and work. This year we encouraged our employees to research and plan volunteer projects for us to complete as a company.
Paterson Volunteer Project
On October 4, 2008 a team of Jacobsen Landscape employees volunteered their time to paint the exterior of Star of Hope Ministries in Paterson. Jacobsen has supported the good work being done at Star of Hope Ministries for many years and this fall beautified their historical building with a fresh coat of paint.

Englewood Volunteer Project
Ben Grace, a Jacobsen Landscape employee, suggested a landscape improvement project at West Side Presbyterian Church in Englewood as a company volunteer project and we were happy to oblige. This fall, Jacobsen Landscape employees volunteered their time to construct a courtyard and leisure garden at the church. This site is also shared by the Center of Food Action’s corporate headquarters so not only will the church and its members benefits but will alsoo be enjoyed by the Center for Food Action’s employees and volunteers.

Food Drive Project
The administrative staff at Jacobsen Landscape hosted a week long food drive to benefit the Center for Food Action. They reached out to our many clients and to the community for donations and succeeded in collecting a truckload of food and supplies, and many donations and supermarket gift cards, all which were delivered to the Center of Food Action in Elmwood Park. The food drive was held in honor of Brenda Jacobsen, sister in-law of owners Glenn and Melissa Jacobsen and longtime employee and volunteer of CFA, who passed away this summer after a battle with cancer. This volunteer effort was aided, by a food drive organized by Friends of Brenda in her hometown of Oakland.

Newark Volunteer Project
Employees of Jacobsen Landscape created a new oasis in Newark at City Hope Ministries. Our employees demolished and existing asphalts areas to create a courtyard and future playground at this church and preschool. Drainage was installed as well as plants and paver walkways to create a beautiful and useful space.

Jacobsen Employees and their Families Enjoy our Summer Event |

| On August 3, 2007 our employees and their families enjoyed our annual summer event at Liberty State Park, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. The day began with a picnic at Liberty State Park, and then we boarded the ferry to visit Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Our employees have many different nations of origin so being able to share some truly American symbols with them was very important to us.
