Hiring a landscaping company in Bergen County to do work on your property is no easy task. Before any ground is broken on a landscape project or any grass is mowed, you want to be sure you’re making the best choice. Here are some questions to ask before choosing a professional landscaping company in Bergen County, New Jersey.

How long has the landscaping company been in business?

Years in operation is an important indicator in the quality of landscape services you are going to get. Companies that are run inefficiently or have poor customer service usually don’t last long, especially in a competitive market. A company that has been around for a while demonstrates two things to potential clients: they’ve earned the respect and loyalty of their community and they care deeply about maintaining their good standing and reputation in the area.

What services does the landscape company provide?

Each landscaping company offers a different array of services to clients. Some are experts in lawn care, but don’t have the skills or knowledge to repair that stone retaining wall that’s been crumbling in your backyard. Others specialize in landscape design and creating new outdoor spaces, but fall short when it comes to maintaining your property after the project’s completion. In almost every case, your best bet is to hire a full-service landscaper – one that offers a complete range of landscape design and landscape maintenance services. As your landscape matures and changes over the years, you will have built a relationship with a company that can handle any sort of project.

What is the size of the landscaping company?

The size of the company and number of employees is another important factor when choosing a professional landscaper. A company that’s too small may not have the experience or manpower to ensure that your project is completed on time and within your budget. On the other hand, your account may get lost in shuffle with a large national company. Your best bet is to choose a landscaper that has demonstrated sustainable growth and development over a substantial period of time but is still small enough that each client counts.

What follow-up and maintenance plans does the company offer?

Unless you’re an experienced do-it-yourselfer, the relationship between you and your professional landscaper should stop at the completion of your landscape design project. The right landscape company is able to offer you an affordable landscape maintenance package to keep your property looking its best year round and protect the investment you’ve made in your landscape.

Has the company won awards and recieved national recognition?

It may seem obvious, but recognition from industry associations and other landscape organizations really do count. There are many different types of awards for landscaping companies, but look for awards from projects that are similar to what yours and are within your budget. A landscaper that regularly wins awards from local and national associations deserves extra points.

Is the company reccomended by past clients?

There are no better judges of quality and satisfaction than your neighbors. Be sure to ask the landscaper for references from previous clients, or approach someone you know who has used the landscaping company before. The best compliment a company can get is a referral from a previous customer, so take client testimonials seriously.

My husband and I want to hire a landscaping company to do some work in our yard over the summer. We've never hired a landscaper before, though, so I'm happy that I found your post! I really liked your tips, especially what you mentioned about finding a company that is recommended by its past clients. I think that if a landscaper's past clients have been pleased with their work, we will be too! I'm going to start reading some reviews for the different landscaping companies in our area right away. Thank you for the advice!

Thanks for the post. I think it is important to know what services they provide. I think you really need to know what the value of what the service is. I really think that can help you to make up your mind when looking for a landscaper.

Glenn, you make a great point about how you should consider how long they have been in business. I would think that a company that has been open for a long time will ensure they have the experience to work on your yard. You make a good point about how it can also mean that they have a good reputation in the area. I just moved into my house and the yard doesn't even have any grass planted, so I will have to ask around for some good landscapers who might be able to help me design my yard.

This is some great information, and I appreciate your suggestion to find a landscaping company that has been around for a while. My husband and I just moved into our first house, and neither of us have much experience with landscaping. We'd like our yard to look beautiful though, so we'll definitely look into hiring a company with years of experience to keep things looking good for us. Thanks for the great post!

I am looking to find a landscape company for my yard and am trying to figure out what the best options are. Like you mention, a very large company can be good, but there is also the possibility of you getting lost in the sea of clients. But if they are really small you don't want them to lack the experience either. I will look for one that has a good reputation, and values me as one of their customers.

It's always a challenge finding that perfect landscaper to do your work for you. Landscapers should not only be able to communicate the plan to you visually but be able to advise the challenges involved in maintaining that landscape design some years from installation. Trees for instance could grow and weeds can collect over time. Hedges could grow out of control without proper trimming. Sometimes knowing what your options could be over time, would help plan the workable landscaping project for you.

My father has this really beautiful yard and garden, but it has become a bit much for him to take care of by himself. You wrote that you should choose a service that has been in business for at least a few years. Since my father is really picky about what he wants done, having experienced people on the job would probably help him get the results that he desires. Thanks for the blog.

I like how you mentioned finding a landscaping service that past customers recommend. My schedule at work just got a lot crazier, and with spring coming up, I'm worried I won't have the time to give my landscape proper care, so I want to hire someone. I imagine that a company being highly recommended is a good sign, so I'll look for one with good customer reviews.

Not long ago, my husband and I moved into a new home. We are looking to redo the landscape in order to boost the curb appeal and value of the home. As you said, it's a good idea to hire a professional landscape company that has been in business for a long time as it shows that they are respectable, loyal, and care deeply about maintaining their reputation.
